Meet Tracey Walker, FIT: Consultant Trichologist based in Cambridgeshire

A Fellow of the Institute of Trichologists with over 40 years of dedicated expertise in hair health, clinical education, and expert witness advocacy.

A Journey from Artistry to Clinical Science

Tracey’s career began in the late 1970s within the hairdressing industry. Her innate interest in the biological health of the hair led her to transition from styling to science.

  • 2003: Qualified through the Institute of Trichologists (London) after a rigorous three-year clinical programme.
  • 2005: Became a full Member (MIT) following a two-year intensive mentorship.
  • Present Day: Continues to advance the field through constant research and participation in global symposiums.

A Leader in Trichological Education

Tracey does not just practice trichology; she teaches it. Her commitment to maintaining the highest standards in the industry is reflected in the senior positions she has held:

  • Director of Education (2015–2021): Tracey served as the Director of Education for the Institute of Trichologists, where she was responsible for shaping the curriculum and training the next generation of International specialists.
  • Board of Directors: Spent 16 years as a Board Director for the Institute, ensuring ethical practices across the profession.
  • Clinical Examiner: She remains actively involved in marking assignments and conducting clinical examinations for student trichologists.

Global Expertise & Research

Hair science is a rapidly evolving field. Tracey stays at the forefront of emerging treatments by attending and contributing to international research conferences:

  • World Congress for Hair Research (Kyoto, Japan): Engaging with global leaders in follicle dynamics and regrowth science.
  • European Hair Research Society (Italy, Edinburgh, Sheffield): Focused on immunology, scarring alopecias, and cell dynamics.
  • Guest Speaker (Poland & UK): Invited by the Polish Trichological Society to give an overview of the Institute of Trichologists, and various UK organisations to speak on specialist topics, e.g., trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder).

Expert Witness Services

Tracey is one of the few trichologists in the UK trained in Expert Witness work. Having passed the CUBS (Cardiff University Bond Solon) course, she is legally qualified to provide:

  • Excellence in Clinical Report Writing.
  • Expert testimony in Civil Law and Procedure.
  • Cross-examination skills for courtroom environments.

Tracey’s practice is built on a holistic understanding of how the body affects the hair. She holds specialist certifications and ongoing training in:

  • Nutritional Therapy: Interpreting blood results to identify deficiencies in serum ferritin levels, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.
  • Hormonal Influence: Managing hair changes related to PCOS, the menopause and thyroid dysfunction.
  • Psychodermatology: Understanding the psychological impact of hair loss and treating conditions like trichotillomania.
  • Textured & Afro-textured Hair: Expert management of mechanical damage and specific grooming practices.

A Commitment to the Community

Tracey’s work is driven by a deep sense of empathy. She spent a decade volunteering at St Theresa’s Day Centre in Peterborough, providing services to the underprivileged, and spent some time as a HeadStrong volunteer for Breast Cancer Care. In this role, she provided intensive support to patients undergoing chemotherapy, helping them navigate hair loss with dignity and practical headwear solutions.
